Redding City Council… Makin’ Moves

Council Approves Construction Incentives

Unanimous.  That’s just not a word you get used to hearing these days in partisan politics.  Perhaps though, it’s a little different when you’re dealing with your own back yard…

The Redding City Council has just unanimously approved some construction incentives that they believe will help the flagging building industry.  This isn’t an entirely revolutionary idea- it’s the same one they’ve been using for the Downtown Redding area for some time, only this one is a little more grand in scale.

Spreading Out The Love

Basically, they decided that instead of making developers pony up mad cash for water and sewer impact fees, they only have to lay down 25% and can pay the rest out over a three year period (maximum- don’t even try to push it to four.).  That’s like, 75% less than usual!  Also, there is some interest figured in there, so it’s not like the City of Redding will be losing out on the deal.

Why the Love?

Well, after trying a few minor shifts, the Redding economy has continued to lag.  Building permits are way down, which means the building of buildings isn’t being done, which means economic hardship.  Redding City Council is doing what it can to prop up what is by far the most lucrative industry Redding has- construction.

Check the Deets!

I’m a two-bit hack when it comes to this reporting stuff, so if you want to know more you should read the article by David Benda in the recent Redding.com story (Incidentally, it is most likely not the same David Benda as this guy, but it would be rad if it was.).

Seriously, does anyone know Dave Benda?  I want to know if he’s down with 80’s BMX action.

The Most Often Overlooked Moment For Success

Business of Real Estate, Opportunities, Succeeding is a process
March 15th, 2009

superhero_pop046Networking ..we all talk about it …social networking, personal networking, business networking, networking networking …. We join groups, churches, country clubs, service clubs, gyms, neighborhood groups, hobby clubs, climbing groups, biking groups, card groups, bunko ..etc ..all the while under the guise of “networking” and building our business contacts …building our influence group ….with the hope that people in the group that we join will do business with us…..without us actually being so blatant as to ask them if they will work with us …

When you first meet someone …what do you say? Do you have an elevator speech of no more than 30 seconds? Are you memorable? Can you explain what you do between floors?

Seth Godin’s recent blog “What’s Your Superpower?” hits the nail on the head.

Survey Considerations

Economic News
February 20th, 2009

tim-berry-2Tim Berry is one of my favorite blog resources for business planning ideas, planning and support. His latest blog on The Trouble With Surveys is right on.

During my education to become a pharmacist I had several statistic classes. The professors drove home with us the need of a pharmacist (or anybody) to be able to determine the validity of medication studies by focusing on how the study/survey was actually done ….the process is as important as the conclusion. It’s the whole thought of Mark Twain of “Lies, damn lies, and statistics”.

It is critically important to know the methodology behind a survey before one gives validity to it’s conclusion.

Miscellaneous Tidbits
February 16th, 2009

newspaper16 pages …that’s it ….anyone guess what I’m talking about?

Today’s local newspaper …the Record Searchlight

Bet it didn’t even weigh 2 ounces …

Someone told me that only 14% now get their daily news routinely from a newspaper.

I haven’t been able to find anything to back that number up ….. but I bet it’s close..

Looks like the Record Searchlight has even given up.

My guess is that less than 14% of the newspaper staff gets their news from their own publication.

16 pages …That’s it
